hk prize is one of the biggest international science and technology innovation awards. It is sponsored by BOC Hong Kong and administered by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation. The award has three categories: artificial intelligence and robotics, life and health, and new materials and new energy. The award has been awarded to 78 people since its inception in 2022. The winners are listed below.
The late director Benny Chan received a posthumous best director prize at the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards for his cops-and-robbers actioner Raging Fire. The film also won best actor (Sammo Kam-bo), film editing, and action choreography. It was the first time that the HKFA ceremony was held after a two-year hiatus during the pandemic. Actor Andy Lau presented the trophy to Sammo, who thanked everyone for their support.
In the documentary section, the jury prize went to Wong Sui-pong for her exploration of a microcosm in Hong Kong’s Hung Hom area and to Oksana Karpovych’s Intercepted, which juxtaposed scenes of Ukraine after Russia’s invasion with intercepted phone conversations between Russian soldiers and their families. The best new director award went to Nick Cheuk Yik-him for his drama about family trauma and student suicide, Time Still Turns the Pages. The film was nominated for best screenplay, best acting, and best supporting actor.
The Board is the highest decision-making body of THE PRIZE, which is responsible for reviewing and interpreting articles in the Charter; suggesting important scientific research fields for THE PRIZE; appointing members of the Review Committee and Compliance Oversight Team; laying down requirements for nominating experts; and shouldering the duty of liaison and coordination between the Board, the Review Committee, and the Compliance Oversight Team as well as between the Review Committee and the sponsoring agencies. The Board will also hold award ceremonies, interdisciplinary academic activities, and science popularization activities.
The judging panel in the art category for THE PRIZE will look at both the artistic merit of the work and the contribution it makes to society. It will reward works that are original, innovative, and of high quality. In addition, the winning artist will receive HK$10,000 and a trophy. The runner-up will receive HK$4,000. The public is encouraged to vote for their favourites via a website. The votes will be tallied and announced in the afternoon of the awards day. The public will also be able to visit an exhibition of the shortlisted works at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The exhibition will run until 23 September. The award ceremony will take place on 24 September at the Hong Kong Cultural Center. All are welcome to attend.
