Data sgp is an R package that organizes longitudinal (time dependent) student assessment data into statistical growth plots. These growth plots allow the user to analyze the performance of students in comparison to their academic peers. Data sgp uses Betebenner’s well-known catch-up and keep-up growth projections to provide longitudinal SGP analyses.
SGP utilizes the historical growth trajectories of Star examinees to predict what their future progress will be, including how much further they will need to go to reach/maintain proficiency. This is done by comparing their projected scores with those of their academic peers nationwide. These peers are students in the same grade with a similar achievement history on Star assessments.
In addition to the SGP percentile ranking, sgpData provides a variety of other statistical indicators that can be helpful in understanding student achievement. For example, the sgpData_CONTENTS table displays how much content was covered by a student during each school year, which can help to identify gaps in learning or areas where instruction may need improvement.
sgpData is an important component of the Star growth report and a great starting point for conducting longitudinal SGP analyses. However, it is important to remember that SGP is a relative measure and does not tell the whole story about a student’s growth. Hence, it is critical to use sgpData in conjunction with other measures of student progress, such as the STAR Index and PIR.
As mentioned above, to run SGP analyses one will need a computer with the free open source software R installed. R is available for Windows, OSX and Linux. Getting started with R is easy and there are many resources on the CRAN website to help new users get up and running. Running SGP analyses also assumes some familiarity with the lower level functions studentGrowthPercentiles and studentGrowthProjections.
