The Domino Effect

You may have played domino as a child or enjoyed watching an amazing domino setup on YouTube. These structures, which are sometimes called “domino art,” reveal a portrait or a landscape when all the pieces have fallen. A domino set consists of small rectangular pieces, typically black with white spots (called pips), that are stacked on end in long lines. When a domino is tipped over, it causes the next piece in line to tip and so on until all the dominoes have fallen. This is the origin of the phrase, “domino effect,” which means any action that results in much greater—and sometimes even catastrophic—consequences.

Dominoes have many uses, including teaching children number recognition and counting. But they are most well-known as games. There are many different ways to play domino, including blocking and scoring games, such as bergen and muggins, which use domino tiles with numbers on them to determine points. Other domino games are adaptations of card games and were popular in some places to circumvent religious proscriptions against playing cards.

Many people enjoy displaying domino structures or creating elaborate designs. Artists, designers, and engineers have created mind-blowing domino creations, such as towers of stacked squares or intricate patterns that look like 3-D puzzles. Dominoes can also be used to build and demonstrate physical principles, such as kinetic energy and gravity.

One of the most famous examples of the domino effect is Admiral William H. McRaven’s advice to University of Texas graduates in 2014: “Make your bed every morning. It takes less than a minute, but it sets the tone for the day.” The idea behind his advice is that if you start your day by taking care of a simple task, you can build momentum and create good habits that will lead to positive outcomes in all areas of your life.

Domino’s Pizza CEO Don Meij has also employed the domino effect in his business. In a recent episode of the show Undercover Boss, Meij went undercover as a delivery driver to see how the company’s employees handled their jobs. He worked with crowd-sourced auto designers to create a new Domino’s delivery car—a colorful, cool-looking, modified Chevrolet Spark that an article called a “cheese lover’s Batmobile.”

Meij believes that this strategy will help Domino’s stay ahead of its competition. It will help the company increase its revenue and profits, and it will give the brand a boost in consumer satisfaction. It’s not surprising that Domino’s has been able to grow so rapidly, especially considering its focus on the domino effect.
