The sidney prize is an annual award to recognise the outstanding research of a student at the University of Sydney. The prize is awarded to an exemplary student, in recognition of their achievements in the fields of political economy or social work.

The University of Sydney has a long and distinguished history of producing outstanding students, whose contributions have enriched our culture, religion, politics, business, legal and scientific heritage, as well as providing leadership in the community. It has produced a number of notable figures in the arts, including soldiers, political cartoonists, alchemists, spies, murderers, ghosts and arsonists, as well as media personalities, film and opera directors, a Premiership football club chairman, best-selling authors and the 1928 Grand National winner.

Among the many prizes that have been awarded to University of Sydney students are the Sidney Prize for Performing Arts, the Sidney Prize for Science, the Sidney Prize for Humanities and the Sidney Prize for Social Sciences. These awards are given annually to a student who has demonstrated academic excellence, a dedication to their studies and a strong commitment to the University of Sydney.

Description and Eligibility – October 2020

1. This award is offered to the student who has been awarded the highest marks in third or fourth year of their Bachelor of Arts degree (Board of Study) for a subject in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Sydney. b. The prize is awarded annually by the Head of the Department of Linguistics or their nominated delegate.

2. This award is offered to the student who has demonstrated academic excellence, a dedicated commitment to their studies and a strong commitment to their department.

3. This award is offered to the student who has displayed a willingness to contribute to the wider community by participating in student-led activities such as student clubs or societies.

4. This award is offered to the student who has achieved the highest mark in the subject area of the degree in the third or fourth year of the degree.

5. This award is offered to the student who has exhibited a willingness to contribute to the wider community in their area of interest by participating in student-led activities such as club or society events.

6. This award is offered to the student who has shown a willingness to contribute to the wider community through their involvement in their local or community environment.

7. This award is offered to the student who has excelled in their course of study at a vocational training institute or university.

8. This award is offered to the student who has successfully completed their course of study at a vocational training institution or university and has made an exceptional contribution to the welfare of others.

9. This award is offered to the student who has undertaken a research project focusing on the environment, or who has developed a research-based program which promotes environmental sustainability.

10. This award is offered to the student who has taken an innovative approach to a subject or who has produced a significant piece of scholarship that advances knowledge in their field.
